The Government of Punjab is considering announcing early summer vacations for schools and colleges due to increasing temperatures and heatwave concerns across the province.
According to Rana Sikandar Hayat, the provincial government is reviewing a proposal to start summer vacations from May 22, 2026, while educational institutions may reopen on August 2, 2026.
Officials said a final decision regarding the vacation schedule will be taken on May 11 after reviewing weather conditions and consultations with relevant authorities.
Heatwave Concerns Behind Early Vacations
The possible change in the academic calendar comes after the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued warnings about above-normal temperatures and heatwave risks during May, June, and July.
According to the advisory:
- 🌡️ Temperatures in many districts are expected to remain above normal
- ☀️ Plain areas may face severe heatwave conditions
- 🏫 Student safety during daytime school hours is a major concern
Officials are closely monitoring the weather situation before issuing a final notification.
Summer Camps Also Under Discussion
The Punjab government is also discussing a proposal to allow:
- 📘 Summer camps in schools
- ⏰ Morning timing activities during vacations
Private schools have reportedly requested permission to organize limited academic activities during morning hours to help students continue learning during the break.
Last Year’s Vacation Schedule
Last year, Punjab schools were initially closed from:
- 📅 May 28 to August 14
However, due to extreme weather conditions, the summer holidays were later extended until August 31.
Final Words
The Punjab government is expected to finalize the summer vacation schedule soon as heatwave conditions continue to intensify across the province. Students and parents are advised to follow official announcements from the education department for confirmed dates and further updates.
